Road safety

As A keen be-lit and Hi-viz jacketed cyclist, both urban and rural, I had not realised I was also an anarchist, according to the rules of David Roche, (Letters, 16 August).

He appears to think that if we are all (pedestrians included) more visible that will sort out the problem. Since he is obviously keen to follow European legislative practice, this should include the absolute legal duty of care for avoiding pedestrians and cyclists that applies in such countries as the Netherlands and Denmark.

If he drove in these countries, equally as crowded as Scotland, he would find little sign of reflective jackets or helmets, but a lot of cyclists and pedestrians who have priority – and motorists who better appreciate that it is they who are driving the killer machines, and, therefore, that they have the prime responsibility for safety.
