Regulatory woes

ever since I read that Tony Blair listed the Freedom of Information Act 2000 as one of his biggest regrets from his time as prime minister, I cannot help but make frequent requests..

My latest garnered the information that the National Midwifery Council has held 155 fitness to practice hearings for nurses at it’s offices in George Street, Edinburgh, since it opened in April 2011 – a mere ten a month.

No wonder the Council For Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (CHRE) criticised the NMC for it’s huge backlog in Fitness To Practice cases waiting to be heard (Law and Legal Affairs, 16 July).

Prime Minister David Cameron criticised the quality of nursing care in Britain in January. Part of the problem in nursing is – as in the banking sector – poor regulation.
