I was puzzled by the statement in your leader (12 
November that “excellence in broadcasting can now be found to rest elsewhere and, this being so, the BBC’s reason to exist in its current form has gone”.

I have trawled through the programme schedules of all the Freeview channels, but I see little grounds for optimism if the BBC were to be removed from the mix.

And, saving your presence, the quality and scope of the Beeb’s news gathering and reporting, is unsurpassed.
