It WAS a good decision by the High Court to find in favour of Adrian Smith (after his employer demoted him and cut his pay after he posted his opposition to gay marriage on Facebook, your report, 17 November). While I profoundly disagree with Mr Smith’s view that gay marriage was “equality too far”, he expressed his opinion on his own time on his own Facebook page.

Mr Smith was not attempting to impose his views on others in the execution of his employment duties or saying his faith prevented him from carrying out his job role. I believe his employer was in the wrong trying to tell him what his opinion should be. It is not the job of employers to dictate the political, cultural or religious beliefs of their employees.

Mr Smith’s case not only had implications for him but everyone who believes in free speech.
