Peerless choice

The UK government has announced that an extra 80 life peers will be created, bringing the number of members of the House of Lords to a minimum of 840.

Not only does this decision represent a negligent continuation of the insidious Westminster culture of cronyism and patronage that led to the expenses scandal, but it also ensures that Scotland is now responsible for electing less than 4 per cent of UK parliamentarians. If Scotland were independent, however, every single one of our lawmakers and leaders, 100 per cent of our parliamentarians, would be elected by the people of Scotland.

The choice that Scotland faces in 2014 really is that simple – vote No and leave power in the hands of unelected cronies of the Tories; or vote Yes and put Scotland’s future in Scotland’s hands.
