Old networks
Sometimes it bothers me when people compare standards of transport in Britain with those of other modern countries, and find ours sorely lacking.
They’re right, of course. We pay too much for what is too often a shoddy, overcrowded and outdated service.
But it is important to remember that newer countries, like Canada, for example (Letters, 3 December), obviously have newer – and therefore better – networks. Because our infrastructure has been around for a long time, it would be one heck of an undertaking to just rip it all out and start again.
