Nato relevance

George Robertson (Letters, 20 July) doesn’t like the SNP. Fair enough. He doesn’t like the idea of independence. Also fair enough, but the one doesn’t follow from the other.

If Scotland becomes independent, it will be a matter for the sovereign Scottish Parliament to decide if it wants Scotland to be in Nato.

As I’ve argued before, it would make no sense for the SNP to continue to exist once it had achieved its goal of independence for Scotland. Thus the party’s views about Nato are quite irrelevant to the independence debate, paradoxical though that may seem.
