Morally suspect

ELLIS Thorpe writes (Letters, 31 January) that “without moral law there are no limits to what politicians could do”.

I do not accept the concept of a rigid unchanging set of moral precepts, whether or not based on Christian dogma. ­Morality is much more nuanced, and requires much more critical thought, and occasionally all possible outcomes are not satisfactory.

I agree with Mr Thorpe’s critique of American policy in relation to “enemy combatants”. However, I am absolutely sick of the populist position that somehow western civilisation is responsible for the grotesque atrocities committed by Islamic extremists around the globe. Can people not see that they too are obeying their own set of “moral laws”.

Can we please leave divine absolutism out of this argument.
