your report (13 November) on the proposed statue of Robert Louis Stevenson does not do the writer justice by describing the route of his Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes as a “13-mile trail”.

The adventurous, if not foolhardy, solo journey from Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille to St Jean du Gard was through one of the wildest and most beautiful parts of France, which at that time was home to gangs of robbers and wolves.

It was undertaken in 12 days in the late autumn of 1878, and is about 120 miles in length.
