Matter of faith
Richard Lucas describes scepticism about the New Testament (Gospel) documents as ideologically driven” (Letters, 24 December). It is true that some freethinkers regard the whole Gospel as a myth. However, historians and most biblical scholars regard the Gospels as historically-based but, at the same time, laced with propaganda. As the author of a book about Jesus and an atheist, I accept that assessment.
It is as foolish to regard the Gospels as wholly mythical as it is to regard them as wholly true; one should not approach any ancient document prejudiced by ideology.
That would also go for professors of divinity, who can hardly remain objective and unprejudiced if they are Christians.
