Many a tear…

I feel very sorry for DJ  Hollingdale (Letters, 10 July), who compared Andy Murray’s tears with someone hearing they had only a short time to live.

For a start there were hardly “floods” of tears and the money has nothing to do with the tears.

This person obviously has no idea the pressure Andy put on himself to fulfil a boyhood dream or indeed the pressure the nation put on him to make history.

Tears are not only for sad times – I have seen lots more tears of happiness at a wedding, the birth of a new baby – the list could go on and on. It would be a pity if we could not show the emotions which come naturally to most people, but not to  DJ Hollingdale.
