Loss assessment
The death of Captain Walter Barrie in Afghanistan at the hands of a “friendly” Afghan (your report, 13 November) is a tragedy not just for his family but for the country. Captain Barrie joined a growing list of courageous men and women who put themselves in mortal danger and paid the ultimate price.
The government’s assertion that the presence of our troops in Afghanistan is keeping the British public safe from terrorist attacks seems increasingly hard to believe while some critics think that the opposite may be true. It appears that these cowardly attacks on our troops will continue until a withdrawal from Afghanistan is completed.
Thereafter it’s anyone’s guess whether the corrupt Afghan government can withstand the might of the Taleban. For those who have given their lives for the cause, I certainly hope so.
