Lobby interests
A suitable quid pro quo for the state regulation and licensing of newspapers, which Lord Leveson seems to want, would be the state regulation and licensing of lobby groups such as Hacked Off.
It is in the public interest that we know who is behind these groups, who finances them, what their real agenda is and how often they meet with people in power.
If there is any doubt about the propriety of such a group, or indeed if anyone has a complaint about their activities, then we will be able to rely on a government-appointed body to levy a fine of up to £1 million on the lobby group, or indeed to remove its licence to exist.
All this sounds fair, surely?
