The debate on late payments and boosting business cash flow rumbles on. But when are we going to admit local government has a payment problem too? With billions running through coffers at local authorities and the NHS, they need to take up early payment options and drive efficiency in the invoice procedure – even the best authorities need to be more businesslike.

This will help them create income through rebates, get value for money for residents, quicken cash flow for SMEs, and, crucially, make savings ahead of what is set to be a very tough year for public sector finances.
