THE Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols, has
been reported as saying that his inability to dictate to the government on marriage equality legislation south of the Border is “Orwellian”.

Despite its diminishing mandate, the Catholic Church still
enjoys privileged access to the ear of government, with regular consultations and unelected representatives on education committees. The law still forces religious education and observance in schools. Despite its own internal sexual discrimination and history of child abuse, it continues to presume to speak on matters of sexual morality.

Nichols now claims that he’s being bullied by the state and chose to use his Christmas Eve sermon no less to preach a message of discrimination that some life partnerships are more equal than others. There’s a word for this: “Doublethink”.
