Happy graze
I am glad genetically modified (GM) crops are to be developed in Britain (your report, 16 July), especially as there now seems to be little opposition.
It is such a contrast from the period when middle-class people, who thought organic food was vital, were fearful of “Frankenstein” food and upset that manufacturers were going to make big profits from GM food.
The benefits will be felt in sub-Saharan Africa where maize will need little or no fertiliser. I can’t imagine the John Innes Centre in Norwich will make vast profits but its work will profit poor farmers and benefit its customers by in all probability warding off starvation.
