Gravy train
The managers of Waverley Station are, in all likelihood, using the advice to counter terrorism at the station during the English Olympics to legitimately advance an ambition that they have always had for the station anyway.
Who will be surprised if the area currently used by taxis and motorists to collect and drop off passengers magically becomes yet another retail opportunity before the end of the year?
Then Network Rail will relent, agree that some passengers do need to be set down in the station after all, and provide a drop-off point and taxi rank that is entered via the car park in New Street – at a quid a go, of course.
The airport toughed it out, and got away with it; do we actually expect the railway to overlook a chance to fleece the passenger or the cabbie?
Waverley Station is a business, and business speaks only the language called money.
I often cross the station as a short cut between Market Street and Calton Road – how long before they come up with a wheeze to charge me for that?
