Daft driving
The penalties proposed by Ron McIntyre (Letters, 24 November) for using mobile phones while driving may be regarded as severe but nevertheless appear to be justified. However, this is just one of a number of actions which can result in a driver being distracted from the job in hand. I would suggest that equally dangerous practices while driving include eating, drinking, adjusting radio or sat-nav, applying make-up, map reading and smoking. All seem to merit similarly severe penalties.
I regularly see drivers using mobile phones. I recently saw a driver trying to negotiate his way through a crowded town centre one-handed while drinking from a thermos flask with the other. However, the one at the top of my list for stupidity is the driver seen taking photographs of the views across the Dornoch Bridge while driving past a lay-by situated for perhaps that very purpose.
