In his last big speech before becoming prime minister, made in Mansion House in June 2007, just as the financial crisis was about to break, Gordon Brown praised bankers for their remarkable achievements and predicted a new golden age for the City of London. His policy of “light-touch” regulation as Chancellor turned out to be disastrous for the UK.

Should we continue to put our faith in the judgment of the No campaign leaders?
