AT A time of year when papers are filled with the same old features on how to stuff a turkey, and what presents to give the person who has everything, how refreshing to find The Scotsman focusing on higher things with the article by Shân Ross on how the universe was formed, courtesy of Scottish scientists.

It may be the only occasion when a daily newspaper has published a diagram of the Big Bang – and one which is understandable by us non-scientists. In 2013 (assuming the universe doesn’t end as predicted by ancient Mayan astronomers) can we have more intelligent articles like this and fewer of the interviews with C-list celebrities that seem to take over papers on Saturdays?
