From the archives: Progress at East Kilbride, 19 July
A PROGRESS report on the new town at East Kilbride was sent yesterday to all Scottish M.P.s, and it was reported that the capital expenditure on all projects there amounted to almost £2,000,000.
On the question of housing, the report indicated that by June 1950, 110 houses had been let, while another 400 were under contract of which about one-half were traditional. Of these 400, about 100 were nearing completion at the Markethill and Kirktonholm sites. Discussing industry, it was stated that the steel structure of the first two buildings of the mechanical engineering research laboratory was complete. The first primary school was at the working drawing stage, and sketch plans of immediately succeeding schools were in hand. The erection of the first school would begin in December, the estimated cost being approximately £150,000.
