LORD Catto, a former Governor of the Bank of England, will be chairman, and Sir John D Imrie, Edinburgh City Chamberlain, one of the members of the eight-man Committee of Inquiry which has now been appointed to examine Anglo-Scottish financial and economic relations.
Mr Henry McNeil, Secretary State, made his eagerly-awaited statement on the membership of the Committee in the Commons today and indicated that they would start work “very quickly indeed”. But he could not say when the committee would be likely to report. Mr Henderson Stewart (Lib. Nat-C., E. Fife) asked if, should the Committee report favourably, the House could assume that it was the Government’s intention, having obtained the necessary statistics, to proceed with a full inquiry into Scottish administration and government. Mr. McNeil: “I think I should not in any way attempt to prejudge the work of the committee.”
