From the archive: Sir Paul to marry, 27 July, 2001
SIR Paul McCartney will marry his girlfriend Heather Mills “some time next year” it was announced yesterday.
Romantically, the 59-year-old former Beatle, who lost his wife Linda to breast cancer in April 1998, got down on one knee to propose to Miss Mills, 33, a former model and landmine campaigner, on Monday during a trip to the Lake District.
A statement said: “Paul McCartney and Heather Mills are pleased to announce their engagement. The couple are looking forward to being married some time next year. Paul and Heather said today they would like to thank their relatives and friends for all the great support they have shown since they met two years ago.”
Miss Mills lost part of her left leg after she was run down by a police motorcyclist in 1993. The couple met in the spring of 1999 when Miss Mills appealed for help from Sir Paul with her charity.
