Friends of The Scotsman: invitation from the Editor

THE Scotsman has a long and proud history of being at the centre of debate in Scotland and I want to continue and develop that. I believe that over a period of years we have seen an ever-narrowing news agenda and as a result I believe there are innovations, debates, research and informative views across broad spectrums of Scotland and beyond that are not getting the airing they need and deserve because they fall outwith the news agenda of the day.

Glenn Gibbons: Reasons to fear for both supporters

Hibernian fans of a certain age are likely to tremble at the recollection of previous, immeasurably better equipped Easter Road sides than the present who have tried and failed to win Scottish Cup finals.

THE old Windmill theatre, where girls posed naked but immobile as the law required and comedians sought laughs from men in mackintoshes waiting for the girls, used to boast that throughout the war years “we never closed”.

WHEN Scotland’s First Minister stood before a group of workers in a Falkirk factory on Tuesday to launch his government’s economic case for independence, Alex Salmond used a well-worn phrase.

NOW we know. Because a water pump failed, Britain came within six hours of running out of gas in March.

Leaders: George Osborne’s Plan B | Poor healthcare

WHILE David Cameron was embarked on his latest round of diplomacy in Europe to try to get EU agreement on tackling tax avoidance by multinational companies, his Chancellor, George Osborne, was back in London responding to the report on the UK economy by the International Monetary Fund.

Leaders: Salmond must flesh out case | Andy’s granny

IF THE document on the Scottish economy published yesterday by Alex Salmond was an attempt to regain the independence initiative after a series of set-backs, it looks to have been at best a damp squib and at worst a failure.

Courting trouble

LABOUR MSP Iain Gray makes a good case against court closure (Perspective, 23 May) and highlights some of the points which we made in our original letter following publication of the Scottish Court Service report in December of last year.

Cashback plea

TO SAY I was disappointed to read about Chief Constable Stephen House’s plea (your report, 24 May) to have the Proceeds of Crime monies returned to the police for their use is putting it mildly.

Something fishy

I READ your article (“Sainsbury admits ‘mislabelling’ Scottish salmon,” 21 May) and felt compelled to comment.

Media dilemma

IF THE brutal daylight murder of a British soldier was intended to get maximum worldwide publicity for a terrorist cause then those responsible got it right (your report, 24 May). The worry now is: will there be copycat killings by other like-minded fanatics?

VIP car park

GIVEN the state of repairs of our roads at this time of economic hardship, I note with interest that the-powers-that-be have now found sufficient funds to pay for the resurfacing of the civil servants’ car park at Victoria Quay in Edinburgh. Long overdue?
