I’M A sucker for historic events, so I sneaked out on Friday morning to the Yes Scotland launch, hoping for a taste of one. The excuse was a promised line up of cultural stars turning out to back Scottish independence, at Cineworld in Fountain Park (screen 7).

Leaders: Attitudes towards work are in dire need of repair

CAR sales and servicing company Arnold Clark has concluded it is “sad and disheartening” to discover that, in its view, more than 80 per cent of young Scots applying to it for work are “unsuitable for any employment”. It says it found that youngsters it hoped to recruit as apprentices had wholly unrealistic expectations of the modern workplace, a poor attitude to others and were taken aback at the working hours expected of them.

Food for thought

Stephen Jardine must agree that the educational benefits of taking children to proper restaurants from an early age must not be overlooked (Comment, 26 May). Experience and habits formed early in life are the most enduring.
