Spicy sausage battle hots up
A GERMAN family is feuding over who can sell “original” spicy currywurst to Berliners.
The currywurst – a fried pork sausage, sliced and smothered with ketchup and curry powder – was first introduced to East Berlin in 1960 by Waltraud Ziervogel, who opened a fast food outlet called Konnopke’s Imbiss.
However, now her son Mario, 48, has opened a rival outlet with the name “Ziervogel’s Cult Curry – since 1960”. Waltraud, 76, sued him, arguing he had no right to the name, not least because he was not even born in 1960. A court on Tuesday backed her over the date, but said Mario could keep the rest of the name.
