Social Democrat ahead of Merkel

The Social Democrat premier of Germany’s most populous state has nudged ahead of chancellor Angela Merkel as the country’s most popular politician, according to a survey published yesterday that highlights the conservative chancellor’s mounting woes.

Germans rated Hannelore Kraft, the leader of North Rhine-Westphalia, ahead of Ms Merkel.
