Merkel backs Sarkozy in re-election bid

German chancellor Angela Merkel gave her backing to French president Nicolas Sarkozy in his re-election fight yesterday, saying the two right-wingers were from the same “political family”.

Ms Merkel caused a stir last month after her Christian Democratic party declared she would appear with Mr Sarkozy on the campaign trail in the run-up to the two-round French presidential election in April and May.

Asked about her stance yesterday while in Paris for a French-German cabinet meeting, she said: “I support Nicolas Sarkozy on all levels because we belong to friendly parties.”

Mr Sarkozy is in a tight fight with Socialist candidate Francois Hollande, who is currently leading him in opinion polls.

Ms Merkel is expected to attend one of Mr Sarkozy’s campaign rallies once he formally launches his re-election bid, probably in early March.
