Floods kill 27 people in India
Raging floodwaters from monsoon rains have killed at least 27 people in India, with the death toll expected to rise.
Floods have overrun more than 2,000 villages in the northeast of the country, sweeping away homes and leaving hundreds of thousands of people stranded, officials said.
About one million people have had to leave their homes as the floods from the swollen Brahmaputra River swamped villages across Assam state.
Assam’s flooded capital, Gauhati, was hit by mudslides that buried three people. Many of the city’s two million residents were negotiating the submerged streets in rubber dinghies and small wooden boats.
