Autobahn frozen to halt by sauerkraut
Piles of sauerkraut tumbled out of a lorry on a busy German autobahn and quickly froze to the road surface, causing a massive traffic jam near Frankfurt during yesterday morning’s rush hour, police said.
A truck carrying hundreds of packages of the pickled cabbage delicacy crashed into another vehicle before dawn outside Friedberg, near Frankfurt.
With temperatures far below zero for the past week, the sauerkraut froze almost instantly, causing traffic to back up for miles.
The motorway was completely shut down for four hours while authorities struggled to scrape the frozen sauerkraut away.
