5 men charged over garlic theft
Austrian police have charged five men with stealing 9.5 tons of garlic after three vans were intercepted trying to cross into Hungary.
Officers stopped three overloaded vans, which were about to cross into Hungary from Austria yesterday and found them packed to the roof with the pungent cargo.
After questioning the five men – all Romanian nationals – in the vehicles they charged them on suspicion of receiving stolen goods.
Police said the garlic apparently came from Spain and estimated its value at €30,000 (£24,000).
