18 dead as army battles Islamists

The Nigerian army said it had killed 17 suspected Islamist militants in battles in the city of Kano yesterday, and militants shot dead one policeman.

Several crackdowns and a state of emergency have failed to stop a rising tide of violence in northern Nigeria. A spate of bomb attacks on churches in Kaduna last week triggered wider sectarian violence.
