Milestone for home of IVF in Scotland
A NEW assisted conception unit (ACU) was officially opened yesterday at Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital, where Scotland’s first IVF baby was born 28 years ago.
The facility was opened by Dr James Mills, one of the pioneering doctors who set up the unit almost 30 years ago.
Dr Mills, along with his colleague Dr Geoff James, established the ACU at Ninewells in 1983 which resulted Scotland’s first IVF baby in September 1984. The unit also recorded the first baby born following treatment using donated embryos in 1989, and the first baby born following treatment using frozen embryos in 1994.
NHS Tayside said: “The newly-refurbished facility houses a theatre, procedure room and embryology laboratory along with consulting and scanning rooms, and andrology laboratory. ”
