Game reviews: Metal Gear Solid HD Collection

GIVEN the rise of cynical HD repacks of old games, it’s easy to be wary of releases such as the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection.
However, this is no mere hatchet job designed to make a quick buck. Instead, what you get are three lovingly remastered Metal Gear Solid titles – the second and third games, as well as PSP smash Peace Walker – which have been brought up to date with impeccable style.
The second and third games may feature complex and antiquated control schemes, but in terms of bringing new ideas to the table and delivering a winning blend of military stealth action and narrative, both titles stand the test of time. With improved visuals and a slick frame rate, this anthology is worth checking out for these games alone.
But it falls to the PSP title Peace Walker to round off the collection, and this is a jewel in the crown for anyone who missed it first time around. Focusing on Metal Gear Solid 3 protagonist Big Boss, you are tasked with forming a crack team of mercenaries and defeating the mysterious Peace Sentinels group.
As you progress through the plot, you can recruit up to 350 new mercenaries and vehicles, as well as micro-managing your secret barracks to ensure the unit functions properly. Peace Walker is a huge, innovative and engrossing experience which fans of the series will surely enjoy, and it finishes off this stunning triple pack nicely.
