Report calls for more training for Scottish students

TRAINING at Scottish colleges may increase the number of students considering moving into self-employment, according to a new report on the further education sector.

Links between Scottish colleges and local employers need to be maintained to ensure both succeed, said the David Hume Institute paper.

The report said the colleges obtain “significantly less public funding per head than the universities and also less than secondary schools”, but still manage success rates only slightly lower than those of higher education institutes.

Jeremy Peat, director of the David Hume Institute, states on the report: “Training in an FE institution, especially when employer engagement/contact is involved, may increase the number of people contemplating moving into self-employment.”
