Reid Kerr College staff to strike over ‘zero’ pay rise

COLLEGE lecturers have voted to strike in a dispute over pay.

Staff at Reid Kerr College in Paisley, which is set to merge with Clydebank College and James Watt College, overwhelmingly backed industrial action after being offered a “0 per cent” pay deal, the EIS union said.

John Kelly, the EIS/FELA branch secretary at the college, said: “Over 87 per cent of those voting at Reid Kerr voted for strike action.

“Staff do not wish to strike but have been left with no alternative. Be clear, however, that they are determined to do whatever it takes to gain a pay rise.

“They have watched their incomes eroded steadily, through inflation and increased pension contributions. Their message is loud and clear, enough is enough, we need a pay rise.”

The EIS is preparing a timetable for strike days following the vote, which saw a turnout of around 70 per cent.

Scotland’s colleges are facing changes as part of the Scottish Government’s plans.
