Nurse training places cut
Reducing the number of student nurses and midwives is the “sensible way forward”, health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said.
The Scottish Government will fund 2,430 places for students who are beginning degree courses in 2012-13 – down from 2,700 last year.
Ms Sturgeon said yesterday there was a “record number” of student nurses already in courses. She added that having looked at the workforce plans of health boards “a reduction in intake for the 2012 academic year is a sensible way forward”.
The number of student nurses and midwives in training has reached an all-time high of 10,384.
Ms Sturgeon said: “The intake sets a balance between ensuring the right number of nurses and midwives for the future while also minimising the risk of oversupply and graduate unemployment.”
The reduction in training places is broadly in line with other parts of the UK, according to the Scottish Government.

Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 11:24 AMI have just been in hospital for an emergency, spending a few days there. The level of professionalism was excellent by all the medical staff. Yet truly the nurses were constantly on the go. Pushing themselves so much made me think that they might end up like myself, a patient just due to shear over work. More nurses are needed and they need to be recruited as soon as possible, without putting pressure on the excellent quality levels offered by NHS staff. Throwing money at the problem may not be fashionable, but it can work.

Friday, January 27, 2012 at 10:17 PMAnd for those who have posted already the point of training more people than are required to replace those retiring is presumably from your point of view to put them on the dole queue. Very intelligent planning!

Friday, January 27, 2012 at 07:46 PMLets get rid of the workers and employ more managers with no medical or nursing experience. It's the way forward in Alba. Ms. Sturgeon lives in the shadow of Benito and adopts the same inane policies.
