Wood Mackenzie: From old-school to new-tech
Wood Mackenzie began life in the 19th century as a stockbroker and undertook its conversion to a specialist research company when it published its first report on the North Sea oil industry in 1973.
It has changed hands several times over the past couple of decades. It was taken over in 1985 by Hill Samuel, which itself was bought by the Trustee Savings Bank in 1987. TSB sold WoodMac the following year to County NatWest, and in 1997 Bankers Trust acquired the research firm.
Bankers Trust was bought by Deutsche Bank in 1999, and in 2001 Paul Gregory, WoodMac’s then chief executive, led its buy-out. Candover came on board in 2005 as an investor before selling its stake to Charterhouse in 2009.
