Virgin Media adds 60 Bellshill jobs

VIRGIN Media yesterday unveiled plans to create 60 jobs at its call centre in Bellshill to cope with demand for its broadband and TiVo television services.

The company already employs about 750 staff at the site, from where it also carries out work for the public sector and small businesses.

Finance secretary John Swinney visited the centre yesterday, alongside Virgin Media chief operating officer Andrew Barron.

Barron said: “In what is a challenging economic time for many, we’re pleased we are able to invest further and offer more people the prospect of an exciting and rewarding career.

“By creating more opportunities, we will be able to meet the sustained appetite for TiVo.”

Virgin Media, which holds dual listings on the London and New York stock exchanges, employs about 2,000 people in Scotland, at Bellshill, Edinburgh and Glenrothes.

News of the jobs being created is the latest in a series of boosts for Scotland’s growing call centre sector.

Department store operator John Lewis said it would take on more workers at its bases in Glasgow and Hamilton, while HeroTSC – Scotland’s largest call centre company – revealed last month that its headcount has grown by a third in the past year to 6,000 staff.

Recruitment firm FPSG said that 4,000 jobs have been created at Scotland’s 400 call centres since 2007.
