Clyde-built ships bound for Brazil in BAE deal

BAE Systems has sold three ships, including two built on the Clyde, to the Brazilian Navy in a deal worth £133 million.

The 90-metre ocean patrol vessels were originally ordered by the government of Trinidad and Tobago in 2007 and constructed in BAE’s Clyde and Portsmouth facilities.

But the contract was terminated in late 2010 and the company has since marketed the vessels to interested countries.

The deal agreed with the Brazilian government includes a licence to enable a further five vessels of the same class to be constructed by the country’s navy.

Andrew Davies, managing director of BAE Systems’ maritime business, said: “This is a significant step forward in our relationship with Brazil.

“The ocean patrol vessels are highly capable ships and I am sure they will be a tremendous asset to the Brazilian Navy.

“We are looking forward to working together and hope this will be the start of a long-term partnership with Brazil in the maritime sector.”

The vessels are capable of more than 25 knots and weigh 2,200 tonnes fully loaded. They are designed to accommodate a crew of 70, with additional accommodation for 50 troops or passengers.
