Rankin sets sights on chart success

BEST-SELLING crime writer Ian Rankin is set to launch an assault on the pop charts.

The Rebus author plans to release a debut single after being signed up to Charlatans’ singer Tim Burgess’s record label.

The recording is a spoken word piece set to music and is about a musician’s dying wish to have his ashes scattered in his friends’ guitars.

Edinburgh-based Rankin, 52, wrote the words which will be read by actor Craig Parkinson on the record, which will be called A Little Bit of Powder.

Rankin said: “Tim contacted me a while back with the idea of a spoken word project – me writing a story – to give out to his fans as a little Christmas gift.

“We met in Edinburgh in August and bounced around a few ideas. I then gathered my thoughts.”
