SCOTLAND head coach Frank Hadden has been assured that his future is safe with the national team following the drawn Test series in Argentina.
Scottish Rugby Union chief executive Gordon McKie believes Hadden remains the right man to lead the Scots into their programme of autumn internationals, and next year's RBS Six Nations Championship.

This year's disappointing Six Nations campaign i
n which Scotland won just one match led to calls for Hadden to be replaced from some quarters, however the SRU have continued to back the 53-year-old former Edinburgh coach.

McKie said: "We are right behind Frank and we want him to carry on and to take the team back to where we want to be, and to see us through a very successful autumn Test window."

The Scots lost their opening Test in Argentina earlier this month but hit back with an impressive 26-14 win in Buenos Aires to tie the series.

McKie was impressed by the performance, and told BBC Scotland: "The team was very competitive, and if they play like that in the games in November, first up New Zealand followed by South Africa, I'd be hopeful that we'd give a good show."

He added: "In the second Test they played extremely well. Not only did Frank take a lift from that, but the players and the squad did as well. It was such a great game to watch that I'm hopeful we'll take something from that when they come back here and play in November."

Hadden's target in the Six Nations is a 40 per cent victory record, which his team were unable to deliver this year.

However McKie sees good reason to be optimistic for the future of the Scotland national team under the current leadership.

"We're very pleased with what's happened in the last 12 months," he said. "Obviously we're disappointed with some results but the margin between winning and losing in international rugby is a very narrow one.

"With slightly more success in terms of injuries and the rub of the ball, hopefully that team can come back and win games."

McKie has also ruled out the creation of a third professional Scottish team.

Scottish Rugby disbanded the Border Reivers franchise in 2007 and had looked into the possibility of starting a new team in either Aberdeen or Stirling.

However, McKie says that he is happy with the way Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors Scotland's two remaining full-time, professional sides are operating at the moment, under the Scottish Rugby banner.

He added: "We have, at this point in time, no immediate plans to establish a third team in Scotland."

Looks like Parks will be exhibiting his quite stunning international skills for a few more matches yet. The SRU are sticking with Hadden because 1. No genuine world class coach would want the job and 2. SRU are too broke to therefore pay enough to overcome that lack of interest. It's us vs Italy for the wooden spoon again in 2009.

We weree doing well in last test when Hadden followed overwhelming public opinion and dropped Parks to the bench. Finally it had sunk in.

Was good game, with 10 minutes to go we were up, we had even got the points to be in top 8 and an easier passage in world cup.

Then he reverted to type and brought on Parks.

Then we lost our 8th spot.

Not a good day for Scottish rugby.

Mckie says:"I'd be hopeful that we'd give a good show." That underlines the lack of drive and poor aspirations at the heart of the SRU. Surely the target should be winning the tough tests. I've wasted enough of my time and money following Scotland in recent years to realise that with Hadden (and Parks) at the helm just "putting on a good show" is frequently beyond the team. Predictable and mundane news which is doing nothing to ease the hangover.

Last season, trips to St. Etienne, Cardiff, Dublin and Rome, plus the home game against England cost me in the order of £4-5K and whilst I do not doubt for a second the commitment and fitness of the players, the team selection and tactics were woeful in every case, including the England game. We were lucky against Itraly in St. Etienne and that we played against perhaps the worst English side I have seen in 25 years doesn't excuse the fact that the responsibility for our poor performances lie with Frank Hadden. He's probably a really decent guy but he isn't an international standard coach with the ability to motivate players and change the course of a game.
Face facts, SRU.

When I heard last night about FH continuing as Scotland my wee heart sunk.

The last 2 seasons have proven that FH is a very poor coach, Wooden Spoon in 2007, dismal World Cup & only just missed the Wooden Spoon in 2008.

His tactics are naïve & have proven futile, his after-match interviews make squirming fare.

His insistance on playing Dan Parks @ 10 & not giving Ross, Paterson or Godman a decent chance is possibly his worst failing.

The fact that the SRU find it in their wisdom to re-appoint this man says more about their utter ineptitude than a 1,000 words could.

Last week Alan Massie did your newspaper no favours in his article stating FH deserved another year, this was unbelievable considering the team results & performances & was based on a victory against a team who were shorn of 10 1st squad regulars, and indeed it could be argued that the 2nd test improvememnt was INSPITE of FH being there.

I truly hope that I am proven to be a bufoon & FH does well with Scotland but I fear the same futile, negative & ultimately unsuccesfull performances.

I have attended most of Scotland’s games @ Murrayfield & watched the Australia RWC & am a regular visitor to Wales but I fear until there is a coaching change I will not continue to subsidise the rewarding of failure that is currently happening @ Murray

McKie does sound remarkably complacent, like everything is rosy in the Scotland garden. No need for a change of coach or a third pro team.

I'm not really sure what there is to be pleased about over the last 12 months, and McKie sounds almost Hadden-like in claiming injuries and luck made the difference, rather than the fact we scored hardly any tries in that period.

As to being, ""hopeful that we'd give a good show," it is hard to imagine many other coaches having the bar set so low. Can you imagine Rob Andrew telling Martin Johnson that?

It *was* a great win in Argentina. But it was practically a scratch side the Pumas put out. It should not paper over the long-term cracks.

Another key question. Who are going to be Hadden's assistants?

I think following last nights meeting, all who were there will agree that there is a great deal of hard work to be carried out before we can truthfully say that everything in the garden is rosy.

Without much hard work, and probably far less insistence on Clubs looking after only their interests, Scottish rugby will continue to bounce from pillar to post and back again.

Perhaps it would be better for everyone if the Borders Clubs were allowed to break away and Premier Clubs had more say in their own destiny - however, the rest of us would need to see something come back in the other direction.

I am, like many of you, a REAL scottish rugby supporter; meaning that I will always watch the team no matter how we play and I will always get the butterflies before kick-off and the racing heart when we are nearing the opposition try line.
However, my patience with the SRU has been untterly smashed. They continue to hire an average coach who cannot even succeed in a 40% success rate in a 6 Nations competition which 9 years ago we actually won. What has happened in the last 9 years that we have gone from title chasers to 'let's win 2 of 5 games'?
Hadden's inability to pick form players such as Cairns and Strokosch and his continual backing of Parks is a sporting crime. And while Japan go for John Kirwan, Wales go for Warren Gatland, Ireland go for Declan Kidney (who has a proven record with Munster), Scotland are left with a former school coach who never coached senior rugby until his poor stint with Edinburgh. Some may say that he did well but, given he had a team that was almost the Scotland team and double the finances of Glasgow or the Borders, I believe he did nothing special...especially considering Robinson has done better in a first season with young, raw players, turning many into exceptional Scottish prospects.
The SRU are obsessed with their debt management, realising little that, if we spent an extra 200,000 a year on a world class coach, we could make more money with a winning team.
I am excited at the prospect of DeLuca, Cairns, Morrison and Henderson fighting over the centre shirts, and Danielli, the Evans', Webster, and the Lamonts fighting over the back 3. Unfortunately I will probably have to watch Parks make mistakes at 10, Southwell offer no attacking threats at 15 and, to add insult to injury, DiRollo at 13!!

The SRU's only concern is the bottom line, they have shown repeatedly that money is their sole motivation they couldn't care less about Scottish rugby,as long as the daft supporters are sucker enough to sell out Murrayfield for the six nations everything is rosy,it is heart breaking,1st the borders are shafted now the natioal team is becoming a joke for want of a decent coach, thank goodness for club rugby.

Mr McKie - "Well Frank, I am afraid that you failed to achieve the agreed requisite number of wins in the 6N's. Thankfuly very few 'real fans' (you know the ones who pitch up at Murrayfield every year to be seen and quaff their champagne) noticed last year's dodgy fare. With a little manipulation of the press, I got that chappie Massie to equate that win in Argentina alongside our greatest ever perfomances, your contract extension will be merely reported as fact and will receive no negative comment whatsoever. As for next season's targets. Well, no one expects us to beat NZ or the Springboks, so perhaps you could try and beat Canada. That game will be played in Aberdeen where we might even sell a few tickets and so make it appear that people actually still care about the game. Clever huh?

"As for next year's 6Ns don't worry where we finish. The players will keep their mouths shut if they know what is best for them. Furthermore, the debt makes sacking you and appointing even a half-decent coach a complete non-starter. Those other unions in the 6Ns are complete fuds appointing coaches whom players, fans and even opposition coaches respect. That will never be our policy as long as I rule. Have a good holiday, Frank! I have earned it"

The SRU is a sycophantic old boys network, how else can you explain the goings on?

Ireland, England, Wales, Australia get new coaches when things are not going to plan, we get the status quo because -

"We're very pleased with what's happened in the last 12 months"!!!!!!!!!!

Very pleased, very pleased!!!!!!!!!!!!, has anybody ever heard such spineless, defeatist nonsense, I wonder how McKie & the SRU would feel if we had won the Grand Slam.

As for -
"We are right behind Frank and we want him to carry on and to take the team back to where we want to be, and to see us through a very successful autumn Test window."

IMO a very successfull Autumn test window would be beating SA or NZ or both, does McKie really think we'll do this under FH?

The most galling thing is with Paterson, Cairns, De Luca, Blair/Lawson/Cusiter, Lamont(s), Beattie, Strokosch, Barclay, Rennie, Hines, Ford, Jacobsen we are not far from being a pretty good team.

FH is simply out of his depth.

So much sense in the earlier posts from people who care about, know about and most importantly support Scottish rugby. Yet so much nonsense from McKie at the SRU. What's the point? At national level, bad to worse sums it up.

I want his job. He can't seem to lose it. If I performed as badly as him I would lose my job.

What a shame for Scottish Rugby, I have gone and will continue to go and watch Scotland play rugby but I can't help feel I am having the mickey taken from me by the SRU. They seem so out of touch with the game itself and it's supporters.

Had we not won against England do you think he would of been pushed by now? Whilst it was a nice victory I couldn't help but wonder at the time if it would mean we would have to be subjected to Haddock for longer.

Yet again the SRU mismanagement team have shown their collective incompetance and that n'er do well, Mickey, sorry McKie his total and utter lack of understanding of what is required of an international coach.
Hopefully Lineen and Robinson will be FULLY involved and bring some international experience to bear.
As far as a replacement is concerned I have a feeling Ian Paxton would do a great job, perhaps with Gregor Townsend or Craig Chalmers as backs coach, winners all!

PaulJ, Could you, or anyone else who was at the agm last night give us plebs any feedback as to what went on since the Scotsman doesnt think it a sufficiently newsworthy event to warrant a few lines?

Was JS voted in as president?
What was the outcome of the cup debate?
Have the rest of Scottish rugby clubs agreed to only playing Borders sides away for the next five years?
Will future agms start an lunchtime to reduce club representation even further?

Sorry, letting my cynicism take over.

The thing that makes me mad is the stated objective! 40% for crying out loud!

Nothing like building in a losing mentality from the start! 40%...the SRU should at least expect, no...demand...a winning objective of 60%. By my calculations, that would be winning three games out of the five 6 Nations games. Or...50% would mean winning four out of eight from the combined AIs and 6Ns.

But...40%...talk about unbridled ambition!!!!

Well its pretty dissapointing to say the least. You know I think that win against Argentina proved very costly. If we had lost, he would have lost his job, so really we gained nothing from it. I hope that he at least (without naming names) gives into his pride and starts picking more creative fly half/ centre pairings. OK Ill name them then. Godman and Patterson should be from now slugging it out for the no 10 shirt and the long term centre pairing just has to be Deluca and cairns. with the combination of those three the opposition defence wont be able to single out the lone midfeild attacking threat.
Just a thought, but maybe we'll get anihilated by NZ and SA in the Autumn then they will have to axe Hadden.

However I more realistically expect that I'll be bulk ordering cans of Stella and hoping that the roses in Scotland are benefiting from the absolute S**** our team has played under the leadership of a complete Balloon!!

Actually chaps, Gordon McKie has done a great job in turning the SRU into a properly run business with a real business ethos. For the second year running the SRU has recorded a break even position. And that in a World Cup year.

Previous administrations have lost money hand over fist and then twice that amount in World Cup years. So, for all you people out there shouting for his head, be aware that he (and the business people he has employed) have had a huge influence on the turnaround in the SRU's fortunes off the pitch.

If you think that does not matter, then you are plainly sticking your head in the sand. Scottish Rugby was very close to going out of business. The crown jewel of Murrayfield was going to be sold. Gordon McKie has been instrumental in turning this all around. He should be getting praised, not slagged off.

Last Friday was the first time I can remember the idea of proper budgets being put in place for the next season. And these budgets have been increased each year. Not bad for a business on its knees 3 years ago.

So, when Gordon McKie says he will sort out the mess of the previous administration in giving Millers an option on the land around Murrayfield, then I believe him and trust him to do just that.

I have it on good authority that he is not the most interesting of blokes to talk to. I don't care, just as long as he continues to get the SRU back on the sound and proper financial footing.

Fed up with all the internet heroes having a go at a man who has made a huge and positive difference to Scottish Rugby. Rant over.

Diehard Braveheart,

I feel sick in the stomach. I was convinced that Parks would never play again after the Italy debacle.....he did. I was convinced that Hadden would gracefully bow out after the summer tour.....he hasn't.
Can anyone remember an SRU review a year or so ago? I have vague recollections of a number of targets, all of which I believe were not met. I seem to remember 3 victories in the 2008 6 Nations was one!!! What is the point of having targets.....it is all chat.

One last point is the great occasion of the Lions. I absolutely love this and am always so excited. I actually cancelled my deposit on the appointment of Woodward last time which turned out to be a shrewd move but I have every intention of going to South Africa. My worry is that Hadden does not get the best out of his players and so it will need to be a huge leap of faith from Geech to select any of our boys. If we were to have a new coach for the 6 Nations, a fresh impetus would be seen in our players and the likelihood is we might get 5 to 6 players on the plane. With the status quo I would bet on us getting no more than under Woodward and that is including Geech and Robson (Dr).
