Wolves defenders back up strong start
EDINBURGH WOLVES American football team had their defence to thank for a 20-8 win over Lincolnshire Bombers at Meadowbank.
In the first evening gridiron game played at the stadium, The Wolves scored 14 points in the first quarter.
David Molloy ran for a touchdown and, at the end of the quarter, Wolves quarterback David Glendinning connected with Campbell Lewis with a 75-yard pass and, four plays later, found Lewis again for his first passing touchdown of the season.
In the second quarter the Wolves defence were able to hold the Bombers offence scoreless and picked up a valuable six points on a fumble return for a touchdown by Derek Donaldson.
However, after half-time, the Wolves offence spluttered and Glendinning threw one of his four interceptions on the night into the hands of a Lincolnshire defender who returned it for a score.
Late in the third quarter, backed up in their own endzone the Wolves offence was judged to have been tackled in the endzone for a safety giving Lincolnshire their second and final score of the evening.
The Wolves defence made sure that the Bombers did not score in the fourth quarter to bring the game any closer.
Coach Don Edmonston said: "We managed to hold their offence and special teams scoreless, I don't even think they had a first down in the second half. Our offence started the game well but mistakes late in the game kept the score closer than we'd have liked. I'm glad of the two week break before our next game on the 19th of May against Glasgow. We've played three games in 13 days and that's tiring for any team."
• QUARTERBACK JaMarcus Russell, was the first player chosen in this year's NFL draft by the Oakland Raiders.
"You have to prove yourself once and for all," Russell said during a news conference following his selection. "I'll be very pleased to go out there and work as hard as I can to make everything possible for the Raiders."
Overall, 255 players were selected with the event ending late last night, but one of the biggest moves of the weekend did not involve a player from the college ranks. Randy Moss, the supremely-talented but controversial wide receiver, was traded from the Raiders to New England in return for a fourth-round draft choice.
