Number one seed Ana Ivanovic, of Serbia, lost the first set of her second round women's singles match against Nathalie Dechy of France, 7-6 (7/2), but rallied to take the second set, again in a tie-break - 7/3. Her opponent fought throughout the third set before the top seed eventually won, 10-8.
Twice former champion Serena Williams defeated Polish teenager Urszula Radwanska, 6-4 6-4.
18th seed Nicole Vaidisova (Czech Republic) beat Samantha Stosur (Australia) 6-2 0-6 6-4
And number five seed Elena Dementieva, of Russia, won her first round women's singles match against Maria Elena Camerin of Italy, 6-3 6-7 (7/9) 6-3.
Number four seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, of Russia, had a straight sets win in her second round match against Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine, 6-2 6-3.
And eleventh seed Marion Bartoli of France defeated Tatiana Perebiynis of the Ukraine, 6-2 7-5
In the men's tournament, third seed Novak Djokovic lost to Marat Safin, in straight sets.
Champion Roger Federer took the first set against Sweden's Robin Soderling, 6-3.
20th seed Lleyton Hewitt (Aus) defeated Albert Montanes (Spa) 7-6 (7-4) 6-0 6-2
In the men's doubles, twelfth seeds Marcelo Melo (Bra) & Andre Sa (Bra) beat Russian pair Michail Elgin & Alexandre Kudryavtsev, 6-3 3-6 4-6 6-4 6-1
And in the women's doubles, Akgul Amanmuradova (Uzb) & Darya Kustova (Blr) defeated the number four seeds, Yung-Jan Chan (Tpe) & Chia-Jung Chuang (Tpe) 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-4
