West of Scotland 26 - 34 Ayr
DESPITE two early tries from Scott Sutherland and Ross Curle, the visitors couldn't shake off a West side which played with a sense of purpose which belies their lowly league position.
The introduction of former Scotland and Lions hooker Gordon Bulloch after only 11 minutes galvanized the home team and they dominated large periods of the remainder of the match, but every time they managed to get within touching distance of the defending champions, a burst of slick, penetrative rugby would re-establish Ayr's advantage.
The four try bonus point West picked up thanks to scores from Murray McConnell, Bulloch, James Kerr and Elliot McLaren was the least they deserved.
Meanwhile, Paul Burke scored Ayr's third try in the 28th minute, then Glenn Tippett and Andy Wilson crossed the line andCurle also slotted a penalty, after moving to stand-off and taking over the kicking duties from Frazier Climo, who received treatment on the field at half-time before being carried to the changing room. The New Zealander was taken to hospital, but is believed to have only a concussion. He may still be fit for next week's top of the table clash against Currie.
