Watsonians 38-12 West of Scotland: West feel force of dominant Watsonians
WATSONIANS secured their third win of the season on Saturday as Mike Ker and Jamie Blackwood turned in superb performances to help see off West of Scotland.
The home side triumphed at Myreside in a game that never looked likely to go West's way from as early as the third minute when back-row Guy Hills crossed for the home side.
The hosts went on to add five more tries as they bounced back from the previous week's loss at Ayr in style.
Watsonians head coach Bruce Aitchison said: "I am reasonably happy, but not content as I feel there is a lot more to come from this group of players."
After Hills had given 'Sonians the lead, West fought back to 7-7 when Howe of Fife product Peter Horne, playing at centre, used his strength to score.
However, two tries in two minutes from stand-off Ker gave the home side a 21-7 advantage at the break. For the second in particular Ker showed good individual skill, but West winger Calum McKenzie should have dealt with a chip through before his opponent touched down.
'Sonians then scored a superb try in the 52nd minute to tie up the victory. Centre Blackwood collected his own grubber kick before setting winger Richard Minto away with a sublime flip pass and the former Kelso man did the rest.
Replacement Tupu Saena scored a further two tries for the hosts with centre Graham Fisken getting a consolation score for West.
