Warriors destroy Wasps to win Glasgow City Sevens
Glasgow Warriors drew the sting from Wasps as they romped to an emphatic win in the final of the NCS Glasgow City Sevens on Saturday. The 48-0 victory was a popular one with the sizeable crowd, who were treated to an excellent afternoon's sport at Cartha Queen's Park's ground.
There had been some intriguing ties in the earlier rounds, but Wasps looked jaded as they were put to the sword by Warriors. The Glaswegians put on a super showing in the final match to thump the Londoners and ensure the trophy remained on home base. Tom Brown got the ball rolling as he notched the first score, and he added another when he broke from half-way for a clear run to the line. Scott Newlands kept the scoreboard ticking over as he grabbed the first of a hat-trick, the second coming just before the interval as Warriors raced to a 26-0 lead at the break.
The Glasgow men continued to dominate after the restart as Newlands bagged his third try when he wriggled through the narrowest of gaps to score. Scott Riddell further hurt the dispirited Londoners with a late try and the excellent Andrew Turnbull put a final gloss on proceedings when he touched down for a well-deserved score at the death.
Warriors were very good value for the victory and plaudits. They had looked the most likely side throughout the afternoon, easing past Whitecraigs in the first round and then looking impressive in beating GHA in the quarter-final. Then they upped their game in seeing off stiffer opposition from Ospreys.
Similarly, London Wasps had played well to beat a good Howe of Fife squad and edged out the Royal Scots team in the quarters and Glasgow Hawks 26-22 in the semi-final.
The splendid afternoon's sport in the bright but blustery conditions was enjoyed immensely by the large and vociferous crowd. And there was a fitting denouement in the plate final between Howe of Fife and Stirling County, the top sides in the Legacy Sevens Series league table prior to this event. In the end, Howe edged the tie 17-14 but Stirling took the series title thanks to their performances in the other tournaments at County, Boroughmuir and Howe.
