Warren compares protege Khan to Arsenal star Walcott

AMIR KHAN insists he remains firmly on track to win a world title – even though promoter Frank Warren treats like him Theo Walcott.

Bolton lightweight Khan, 21, has agreed a new contract with Warren – although no details have been disclosed – ahead of his next scheduled fight at the MEN Arena on Saturday, September 6.

Khan's opponent will be announced later this week and the 2004 Olympic silver medallist will aim to extend his run to 19 straight victories since turning professional.

Khan has previously declared his intention to win a world title before his 22nd birthday in December, but Warren admits that scenario is unlikely.

Khan was floored in the second round of his fifth-round stoppage win against Michael Gomez last month and Warren insists his protege remains a "work in progress". Warren, an avid Arsenal fan, said: "I very much doubt Amir will be ready for a world title shot this year but it depends on circumstances and who is around at the time.

"But if I was telling the truth I would think he'd need a couple more fights before he is ready.

"I liken Amir's situation to Theo Walcott's at Arsenal. There were plenty of times I was sat there thinking Theo wasn't going to do it for the Arsenal.

"But he started getting stronger and Arsene Wenger brought him on at the right time and he did the business towards the end of last season. It's the same with Amir – we will not rush him because when he contests a world title fight he needs to be ready to defend it again and again."

Khan said: "Frank is a great promoter and is one of the best matchmakers out there, so with him on my side then my dream of becoming a world champion will definitely come true."
