Wanderers fail to make most of chances in derby draw with Cougars

MURRAYFIELD Wanderers were left to rue missed opportunities as they were held to a 13-13 draw in the Scottish Hydro National One derby against RHC Cougars on Saturday.

The home side went into the match played in the shadows of the national stadium on a high having won their last three matches and scoring 121 points in the process. That run had helped them to cling to the coat tails of second placed Whitecraigs, but they are now 11 points behind them after their second draw of the season.

Wing Stuart Young scored Wanderers only try of the encounter with the other points coming from the boot of Ally Borland. Unfortunately Borland missed another three kickable penalties and numerous other try scoring chances were lost by players taking the wrong option.

Murrayfield Wanderers president Paton Wallace said: "I think it was just a bad day at the office for the guys. Perhaps they had become a bit complacent because of the good run they had been on, but I suppose it was something that we got a draw rather than a loss out of it." After picking up two points, RHC Cougars now sit seventh and are fading further away from the promotion race.

Elsewhere in National One on Saturday Edinburgh University and Livingston lost to Ellon and Dalziel respectively.

Lasswade lost ground on leaders Greenock Wanderers as they lost 22-17 to Highland in National Two, while Preston Lodge were beaten by Waysiders Drumpellier. Forrester and Trinity Accies both lost in National Three with Ross High drawing with Helensburgh.

North Berwick are still top of East One after a 46-17 home thumping of Penicuik, while there were also victories for Portobello and Edinburgh Northern. And Dalkeith top East Two after edging out Inverleith 9-3.
