Volleyball: Edinburgh University in near cup shock
Edinburgh University came close to a major upset in the fourth round of the women’s Scottish Volleyball Cup.
The non-league side led first division North Lanarkshire by 2-1 on sets away from home and looked on the verge of a shock quarter-final place. But the home side, second in the top flight, came through 20-25, 25-13, 13-25, 25-11, 15-10.
Holders City of Edinburgh took their place in the last eight after beating Su Ragazzi without too much concern 25-14, 25-13, 26-28, 25-16.
Ragazzi threatened an upset when they won a tight third set but Edinburgh provided the perfect response to close it out in four.
Edinburgh’s NUVOC also reached the quarter-finals with a straightforward 25-15, 25-22, 25-10 victory over North Grampian.
In the fourth round of the men’s cup, City of Edinburgh had little trouble beating South Ayrshire 25-15, 25-20, 25-20 away from home as they seek to hold onto the trophy.
City of Edinburgh II, who lead Division Two (East), had the chance to test themselves against top-league opposition against current league champions Kilmarnock Blaze.
Their young side performed well, particularly in the first set, but Blaze had too much experience and won in straight sets, 25-20, 25-15, 25-19.
Edinburgh Jets secured their place in the last eight by beating Bon Accord in three tough sets, 25-23, 25-18, 25-21.
