Tweddle edging closer to Olympics

GYMNASTICS: Beth Tweddle took another step towards London 2012 after she won gold on the uneven bars in the second Olympic trial event at Pipers Vale, Ipswich.

The result caps a successful return for the three-time world champion after she was forced to sit out last month’s European Championships after undergoing keyhole surgery on her knee.

Tweddle chose only to compete on the bars – missing out her other apparatus, the floor and scored 15.300, marginally down on Saturday’s qualification score.

Briton Jenni Pinches won the vault final ahead of Finland’s Annika Uvikko and team-mate Niamh Rippin, while Jocelyn Hunt led the way in the floor final and also came second on the beam behind Spain’s Ana Maria Izurieta.
